What does 404 page not found mean?

When you see this during a visit to a website, it means your web browser was successfully connected to the host aka the website’s server. But it was unable to show the resources that you were trying to see.

Let’s say, you are trying to visit “exmaple.com/page-url” but it shows “error 404 page not found”. It is because there is no content now with the slug page-url on exmaple.com.

Take Google as an example.

The one-line answer is, it shows when a page user looking for does not exist for some reason. Well, the reason could be the webmaster deleted or changed the page URL without proper redirection.
